Monk Bretton is a Village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It is located about 2 miles North East of Barnsley Town Centre. It has a strong Cricketing history being the birthplace of Darren Gough the former Yorkshire and England fast bowler. It is also said that legendary Umpire Dickie Bird once worked at the local Colliery, and his Autobiography sold over 1 million copies. Dickie created the Dickie Bird Foundation whose vision was to assist young people under the age of 16 to participate to the best of their ability in the sport of their choice. The 2016 nomination was to support the career of Harry Brook, then aged 17, who has gone on to play for England, and is quickly becoming one of the World’s top Batsmen. Even in his later years, Dickie is still having an influence on the game that he loves so much!
