Crofton is a Village in West Yorkshire about 3 miles South-East of the city of Wakefield and about 6 miles west of Pontefract, with a population of about 6,000. Coal Mining became important to the area in the 19th Century, with 3 Coal Mines within a 2 mile radius of the Village.
Crofton Castle was built in Towers Lane in 1853 by John Blackburn in the style of a Gothic Manor House, complete with a parapet. It acted as a Prisoner-of-War Camp during the 2nd World War for captured Italian Soldiers. Today Crofton is more of a commuting Village with people travelling to work in nearby Leeds, Wakefield, York and Sheffield.
