Music Festival at Six Poor Folk, Knaresborough HG5 8AR
Knaresborough is a popular and picturesque Market Town in North Yorkshire, situated on the A59 York to Harrogate main road. It is well known as being the home of Mother Shipton, some Mediaeval Castle ruins and an iconic Railway Viaduct, and it’s reflection in the River Nidd which must be one of the most photographed views in the County! It is also famous for hosting England’s oldest Tourist Attraction, namely Mother Shipton’s Cave, former home of Ursula Sontheil, later to become known as Mother Shipton. She was apparently born during a violent thunderstorm in 1488 and became famous as a Soothsayer and Prophetess whose many predictions included the exact year of the outbreak of Bubonic Plague in London and the Great Fire of London, the following year.
It is also known for it’s variety of Public Houses, one of which is the rather uniquely named ‘Six Poor Folk’ which seemingly got it’s name from the 1611 survey that recorded the building as being used as an Almshouse and the oldest in the town, and was designated as caring for ‘Six Poor Folk’. The building was carefully restored in 2017, preserving it’s late medieval character, including it’s low timber beams and exposed stone.
Six Poor Folk is now a lively independent Cafe, Bar and Bistro, well known not only for it’s selection of local Real Ales, Craft Cider and Food, but also for Live Music. Saturday 18th July is the date of their Annual Music Festival, and starting from 12 noon, there will be appearances from 7 local acts, ranging from solo singers to the final set by Chequered Past, a brilliant Mod and Ska Band at 9pm. It is a ticketed event which are available from the Venue for £25.
