The Grayston Unity is an Independent Bar owned by folks who live in Halifax. It’s in a building that dates back to the 1860s. The bar itself is the bit that used to be for carriages to enter. During the week and on occasional Sundays there’s lots going on (see the Events Section on the Facebook page). Live music takes place in the back room (the UK’s smallest music venue) and in the backyard in the summer months. There is also a Folk and Roots night, a Jazz club, an Open mic, Art Exhibitions, Sunday sessions and lots more. In addition, we hold a Poetry Slam Night, spoken word festival, a monthly Music Quiz night, and the occasional bit of Theatre!
Since opening in 2016 we’ve been awarded the Yorkshire Post Pub of the Week and Calderdale CAMRA Pub of the Season. We’ve been in successive CAMRA Good Beer Guides, and were 2018 Parliamentary Pub of the Year for Yorkshire & Humberside as well as ‘Bar of the Year 2018’ award in the Halifax Courier Business Awards. Also in the UK top 10 of Pubs with Live Music (The Guardian).
Music is very important to Grayston Unity and you can expect an eclectic mix of background music – the bar is all about conversation.
How did the name come about? Grayston was the founder’s Mother’s family name and is in memory of her. Until the 1950s members of her family owned a brewery in the centre of Keighley and their pubs included the Turkey Inn at Goose Eye.
Unity? Well, we believe in the Goodwill of People and being together as one!
On Wednesday 26th February there is an Unplugged Open Mic Night in the bar from 7.15pm hosted by Mick Shaw. Unplugged Open Mic says what it does in the name, welcoming Musicians, Writers, Comedy, Poetry and more.
